National Disaster Relief Work: Volunteers who wish to advance beyond local operations can become part of a qualified team of professionals who respond to large-scale disasters across the country. Volunteers serve on location in various parts of the country for two or three weeks, often times in very difficult environments including limited electricity, running water or shelter.  Must be willing to work as a team and can tolerate ambiguous situations.




Community Event Volunteers: Volunteers represent  Red Cross at community fairs and events at schools, cultural events and local stores during daytime weekdays and weekends to promote programs and services. Training and preparation for volunteers is  provided.

General Office Support: Volunteers help with a variety of general office responsibilities including answering phones, mailings, greating customers, and providing administration support to various departments.

Heath and Safety Services: Teach others how to prepare for, cope with, or respond to an emergency.  Become a volunteer health and safety instructor and help our community to be prepared.

Young Adult Opportunities: The Greater Hanover Chapter has many volunteer opportunities for young adults including service projects that meet school gradutation requirements, fund raising opportunities, involvement with our annual Learn-to-Swim program, food pantry program, disaster services, leadership and internship opportunities. Veteran Transport Services Volunteer Drivers: A partnership with the Disabled American Veterans Administration, provide transportation for local veterans to area VA Medical Centers and Clinics including Lebanon, York, Camp Hill, and surrounding facilities in West Virgina and Washington D.C. area.  VA van provided.



Disaster Action Team Member: Respond to local disasters such as house fires and aprtment fires.  Volunteers provide assistance to families by arranging temporary housing, and vouchers for food, clothing, and replacement of necessary medicines, eyeglasses, and/or medical supplies. Program also uses licensed specially trained mental health volunteers that provide support to victims to assist with the emotional side of a disaster. DAT volunteers also provide emergency personnel on the scene of a disaster with respite care including hot and cold beverages, sandwiches and snacks.   To get started with you volunteer experience today, take the on line training course, Introduction to Disaster.

Blood Drive Volunteer Program: Volunteers greet donors at blood drives, coordinate registration of donors, serve refreshments, observe donors’ well-being following donation.

Food Pantry Program: In operation for 80 years, volunteers provide supplementary food and personal care items to income eligible residents facing temporary setbacks or continual financial hardships due to under- or unemployment. Volunteers distribute perishable and non-perishable grocery items including meat, cereal, eggs, cheese, soup, cake mixes, and frozen and canned vegetables.  Personal care items include toothpaste, toothbrushes, mouthwash, soap, and deodorant.  Cleaning supplies offered include laundry detergent, fabric softener, dryer sheets, dish detergent, and toilet tissue.  Volunteers also help pack, sort, and restock the shelves.  Food distribution is provided three days each week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and includes evening hours to accommodate families who work during the day.  Home deliveries are made by volunteers to area seniors, shut in's and disabled veterans.
