• Can my child register for more than one week?  Register your child for one week at a time. When your child completes his/her class, call the Red Cross reenroll for the next level. Enrollment can be compeleted at the pool on Fridays or by stopping at the Hanover Red Cross, 529 Carlisle Street in Hanover.
  • My child took other classes through another group or organization, They can swim but they have never taken Red Cross instruction. Why does my child have to enter Level 1?  Each agency emphasizes different skills in teaching swimming and water safety. To ensure the proper skill level is established for your child, the American Red Cross start all first time students at Level 1.  If the student can preform all the skills required to pass Level 1, they are immediately passed to Level 2 and so forth during the same week of instruction.  Please note that Level 1 students are grouped according to age so that children will be comfortable with their peers during their instruction.
  • What is Parent's Day?  Level 1 emphasizes water adjustment, preparatory activities for swimming and enjoyment of the water. This is the level where we introduce the child and the parent or care giver to the Red Cross Water Safety program. Our hope is that the care giver or parent will learn important safety information that can be used anytime they enjoy the water together. For children who are experiencing the water for the first time, they have someone they know nearby on that first day!

  • I have heard you refer to Water Safety Instructors, Water Safety Instructor Aides and Lifeguards. What is the difference?
  • Instructor - A Water Safety Instructor needs to be at least 17 and pass the instructor course (40 plus hours of training). Every day you will see our staff instructors and we have many volunteer instructors who visit the pool on a regular basis.

  • Aides - Our instructors train and supervise more than sixty Water Safety Instructor Aides who must be at least 12 years old. An aide must have good swimming skills and a sense of maturity and responsibility to be accepted into our training program. Aides will work directly with your child every day to demonstrate skills and teach water safety. Like all of us, the Water Safety Instructor Aides learn new things as they volunteer. Instructors work with aides every day as part of their learning and leadership development. If you have any concerns or questions during your child's class, please talk to our instructors and your child's aide.

  • Lifeguard - We assure safety by having a certified American Red Cross Lifeguard on duty during classes.

  • What is the ratio of Water Safety Instructor Aide to student?  Level 1 and 2 classes have three or four (sometimes fewer) children assigned to two Water Safety Aides. Levels 3, 4, 5, 6 usually have four to six students in a group.
