The first official meeting of the Greater Hanover Red Cross was held in May of 1917, arranged by J.W. Gitt and held at Eichelberger High School.
The first chapter was housed at 217 Broadway, the Civic League Building, which now holds Hanover Pediatrics.
In this first year, the Red Cross raised $20,816.05 which was all sent toward the War Effort.
During the Depression years, in order to help area families in need, the Hanover Red Cross starts a community food pantry program which remains an active program to this day.
During WWII, the chapter moved to the Hanover Square, Hanover Trust Company.
In 1945, the chapter was on the move again and settled at 256 York Street.
The Red Cross Hospital Volunteer Program began in 1959, being called the Gray Lady Volunteer Program. The Program continues today with many of our original volunteers still participating.
Once again, the Red Cross moved to a new chapter house in 1962 to handle its growing role in Hanover. 450 Carlisle Street (now Rhineart Realty)
In 1982, the chapter progressively forged ahead, adding programs and services. Again, the chapter outgrew its headquarters and set out to build today's chapter house at 529 Carlisle Street.
In 2007 the Chapter launched it's first expansion campaign since 1982. The "Invest in Life" Campaign is supporting the acquisition, renovations, and expansion of 525 Carlisle Street, adjacent property located next to the Chapter House. The campaign will provide much needed space for our disaster services, food pantry, and health and safety programs as well as create a new permenant blood donation center and more parking.
