Special thanks to the Lions Club of Hanover for their generous support of the Learn to Swim Program.
The Greater Hanover Chapter is offering the newly updated and revised American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety Program for 2009. A summer tradition for more than 60 years, the Hanover Red Cross Water Safety Program has taught generations of children in our community how to be safe in and around water. Affordable training that combines the best in swim instruction with an even stronger emphasis on drowning prevention and water safety is ideal for anyone who wants to enjoy the water safely.
The revised Learn-to-Swim Program highlights include:
- An increased emphasis on water safety & drowning prevention as the basis of swimming & water recreation;
- New placement and distribution of the skills throughout the Learn-to-Swim levels to help reduce bottlenecks and optimize skill acquisition;
- New up-to-date diving techniques;
- The most current teaching methods of swimming strokes; and
- Six levels of swimming.
Preschool Aquatics Program includes:
- Three (3) swim levels specifically designed for the developmental needs of pre-school aged children;
- Course is designed for children about ages 4 -5 years old ;
- Skills are age appropriate to help children achieve success and comfort in and around the water;
- A positive learning experience in the water that encourages greater independence; and
- Personal safety and safe practices in and around the water.
Registrations begins June 1, 2009 and is held at the Greater Hanover Red Cross, 529 Carlisle Street in Hanover.
Begins Monday, June 29 and concludes the week of August 3.
American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim courses are designed to help keep parents involved in the learning process. Two booklets for participants in Levels 1-2 and Levels 3-4 reinforce skills learned in class.
Every Monday at the pool, parents will receive a newsletter including information on safety, tips on reinforcing skills learned, and the Water Safety Instructor and Aide who are responsible for teaching your child.
Course instruction is group based and is conducted by Water Safety Instructors in conjunction with volunteer Water Safety Aides -all certified and trained through the American Red Cross. Together, they work closely with your child to demonstrate and practice swimming skills, refinement of strokes, and basic water safety.

Pool Location: Neiderer's Community Pool, 175 N. Second Street, McSherrystown, PA.
Class Time: Each class is 50 minutes in duration for five consecutive days -- Monday through Friday. Choice of class start times are: 9:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.
Cost: $25 per student/per week, maximum $100 per family/per week. Payment is due at time of registration in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Checks should be made payable to: Greater Hanover Red Cross.

To Register: Registration is held at the Greater Hanover Red Cross, 529 Carlisle Street. Anyone can register your child; however, a parent or legal guardian MUST SIGN the registration form. Additional registration forms are available by clicking on the appropriate link to the left of this page. Registration will be conducted on the following days:
- June 1 through June 5 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.
- After June 5, Monday - Friday 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and beginning July 3;
- At Neiderer's Pool on Fridays 9:00 a.m. - noon
To assure that each family has an equal chance at their first choice of a preferred week, you may only register your child(ren) for one week at a time. Following your child's week of instruction, students may re-register for the next level of instruction or additional instruction at the same level. Beginning July 3, for your convenience, Red Cross personnel will be available each Thursday, at the pool, to complete the registration process. You may also re-register at the Red Cross during regular business hours, Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Course instruction is conducted by certified Water Safety Instructors in conjunction with Water Safety Aides. Together they work with your child everyday to demonstrate and practice swimming skills and strokes, provide clear and constructive instruction, and evaluate progress. Water Safety Aids are trained Red Cross volunteers who are in their teens and many of whom have been through the Learn-to-Swim Program.
