With the holidays quickly approaching, we would like to thank you for your interest in the Greater Hanover Red Cross "Hope for the Holidays" Program.  Each year this community-supported program reaches out to area residents who are income eligible, are experiencing serious health problems, or have fallen on hard times.  The program also benefits disabled veterans and seniors who are living alone with little or no family support.

At both Thanksgiving and during the week of Christmas, program participants receive a holiday "basket"  containing staple goods such as turkey, fresh produce, bread, pasta, eggs, fruits, soups, vegetables, dessert, and personal care items. Households with children under 15 also receive toys and gifts at Christmas. The American Red Cross respects and honors all religious backgrounds and their specific holiday traditions.  When registering, individuals may request foods and gifts that are closely related to their religious beliefs and traditions.

Because of caring people and organizations, last year nearly a thousand area families received the joys of the Season at both Thanksgiving and Christmas. The Red Cross anticipates substantial growth in this year's program and is counting on your support to help us make the holidays brighter for those in need this holiday season.

  • Adopt an individual, family or multiple families by collecting, purchasing and delivering food and gifts to a deserving family. The Red Cross interviews each program participant to ensure program qualification.

  • Donate, contribute, or purchase grocery gift cards.  The Red Cross uses financial contributions to purchase turkeys, hams, chickens, and perishable foods in bulk.  By pooling donations, we can purchase food worth thousands of dollars from food banks and local stores at a more reasonable cost.

  • Tune in to the WHVR-1280 AM Feed-A-Friend Marathon on December 10, 11, and 12.  Year after year, the Feed-A-Friend Marathon brings out the best in community spirit, friendly competition, and compassion for fighting hunger in our community.  Collect non-perishable food items or make a financial donation and be sure to call into the Marathon at  717-637-0052 with your pledge.  Pledge cans for each of the 50 hours and  your business or organization will be mentioned every hour of the marathon.

  • Volunteer to help collect, sort, and pack items into boxes that will be delivered to various families or help to interview eligible families enrolling in our program.

  • Buy a new toy or donate used toys to the Toy Workshop Program at Trinity United Church of Christ, 116 York Street. Toys are accepted all year.

  • Save the Date: Monday, December 22 and Tuesday, December 23. Help to pack, wrap, or deliver baskets of food and toys to families the week of Christmas. Once again we will be working from the Utz Quality Foods Warehouse on Kindig Lane.  The best hours to volunteer will be 7:30 am - noon.

  • Play Santa: Arrange for an Angel Tree at your business or organization that will enable groups or co-workers to purchase clothing, toys, and/or gifts for children, families, disabled veterans, and seniors.

We look forward to your participation this year, and hope that you will help be a part of this vital holiday project.  Please complete the family adoption request form and return it to Adam Smith at the Hanover Red Cross.  If you would like more information, please do not hesitate to contact us at 637-3768 or through email at smitha@hanoverredcross.org.

Thank you in advance for your support.  Everyone deserves a joyous and happy holiday Season, and with your help we can make a difference.  Without your support there could be no "Hope for the Holidays."
