As many of you know, the Feed-A-Friend Marathon is a 50-hour continuous live broadcast to collect food and financial pledges for hungry families in our community. Year after year, the marathon brings out the best in community spirit, friendly competitions, and compassion for helping to fight hunger in our community.
Pledges of food and financial donations to the marathon are used by the Greater Hanover Red Cross to support their community food pantry and the annual "Hope for the Holidays" program. More than 185 families, most with children, visit the Red Cross food pantry each month and 1,641 area families experienced "Hope for the Holidays" by receiving meals at Thanksgiving and Christmas.
The need is crucial. Energy prices, food inflation, and the housing crisis have taken their toll on many hard working people. Many will find themselves in need of food assistance for the first time this holiday season.
It takes only one visit to the Red Cross Community Food Pantry to see faces of hungry children to know the importance of the Feed-A-Friend Marathon. Please join us in our fight against hunger by hosting a school-wide food drive and supporting the 23rd Annual Feed -A-Friend Marathon.
2008 "Hope for the Holidays" Program
Each year this community-supported program benefits area residents who are income eligible, experiencing serious health problems, or have fallen on hard times. The "Hope For the Holidays" Program also benefits disabled veterans and seniors who are living alone with little or no family support. We need your help to help brighten the holidays for a family in need. Please consider adopting a family, hosting an Angel Tree at your place of business or conducting a food drive. Please click here for more details.
Call 717-637-0052 during the marathon to make a pledge or announce your donation.
How Can You Help Fight Hunger?
Your company can support the Feed A Friend Marathon by organizing an employee drive and making a donation of canned and non-perishable food items. Financial donations are also accepted. Checks should be made out to the Hanover Red Cross C/o Feed A Friend Marathon. For more information on how to hold a successful food drive, visit www.hanoverredcross.org. In addition to the obvious benefit of helping those in need in our community, you can earn recognition for your efforts on the radio. Here's how:
- In advance, pledge a number of canned or non-perishable items to be donated every hour of the marathon. For example, you can pledge 25 cans every hour, which would total 1,250 cans or a monetary donation of $416.67. WHVR air personalities will read your pledge on-air at the beginning of each of the 50 hours of the marathon. Contact Deb Trapani at 637-3831 for more details.
- During the marathon, call 637-0052 to pledge canned or non-perishable items or money. For monetary donations, make your check payable and mail it directly to the Greater Hanover Red Cross. We will count three cans/items for every dollar pledged. When you make your pledge, you can challenge your competitors, employees, or other organizations.
- Visit the Hanover Foods Outlet Store on Wilson Avenue for specials on cases of cans during the marathon. Leave them there and the Red Cross will gladly pick them up.
How ever you decide to help, be sure to notify Deb Trapani at WHVR-1280AM by calling 717-637-3831. By calling in advance of the marathon we can be sure to count your pledge and promote your organization or business. Our goal for the marathon is 128,000 cans.
We hope you will consider supporting our efforts to provide food to those who battle hunger and are in need of a helping hand. Thank you in advance for your support.
